Morocco Atlas track : from Imsfrane to Imilchil

Today we share with you our first track in the Atlas of Morocco, it led us through a spectacular road between Imsfrane and Imilchil, sinking deep into the Atlas mountains. We decided to leave the track of Vibraction’s RB33 to explore even more isolated regions and discover the majestic landscapes of this remote part of the Atlas of Morocco.

The track and the conditions

The track between Imsfrane and Imilchil is an experience that must be started early in the morning to enjoy the day. It is true that it offers breathtaking views of mountain passes and impressive canyons. However, it is important to note that parts of this road will be asphalted in a few years to facilitate access to very isolated villages. For the inhabitants, this represents a relief, because these villages are often very poor and difficult to access, especially for the distribution of water by tank trucks.

Our advice

We completely advise against bivouac in this region of the Atlas, several Moroccans have advised us against it as a European. The presence of many very poor houses along the road makes bivouac difficult. To fully enjoy this adventure, it is better to leave very early in the morning.

You will cross extremely poor villages. We prefer to prepare you for this because for some people it can be difficult, a lot of begging from children. I beg you not to give anything to the children because you do not encourage them to go to school. Their father’s salary being on average 15DH per day, imagine a child who earns much more than his father by begging. It is not a gift that you give them and you do not assure them a future. If you want to give food, money, clothes, give to the village chief or the Imam.

It is possible that if you do not give to the children, they throw stones at your cars. However, remain uncompromising so as not to give in to the fear of a pebble.

Accommodation in Morocco in the Atlas

In Imilchil, we strongly recommend that you stay at Said’s inn. For 70 DH at night, you will benefit from a hot shower and a breathtaking view of Lake Tisli. Said and his wife are incredibly welcoming hosts. They will prepare you a delicious tagine if you warn them in advance of your arrival. Don’t miss their homemade cookies, they are to die for, accompanied by a tea with Atlas herbs is just the perfect combination!

Crossing the track between Imsfrane and Imilchil is an unforgettable adventure. She will make you discover breathtaking landscapes and a rich culture, especially by meeting Berber women with tattooed faces. Although the conditions are sometimes difficult, the beauty of the Atlas Mountains makes this trip exceptional. Due to isolation, prepare well by taking water and food, leave early and enjoy every moment of this wonderful expedition.
