Alps 4×4 Trails: the ultimate route, 750 km of tracks and military roads

Let’s be straight: these Alps 4×4 trails weren’t dreamed up behind a screen. We drove them, track after track, in our Defender 130. More than 750 km, 55 % of it off-tarmac, the rest on quiet back roads and forgotten lanes. Our roadbook is the real GPS line you download, wild-camp spots included.

Why order this Alps 4×4 trails roadbook

A tested line, not a compilation

750 km driven by us. Nothing traced off a map: every trail, we rode it ourselves.

GPX tracks ready to load

Import the file into your GPS or your app, and drive. No headaches.

The right passes, the real spots

Legendary passes, military roads, viewpoints and technical sections: we share what we wish we’d known beforehand.

You stay free

A clear thread to follow, but you keep control: variants, shortcuts, flexible timing.

We won’t promise you the Alps all to yourself. But here’s what we can promise: far fewer people, landscapes that earn the detour, and a route we stand behind 100 % because we lived it.

If you’re after a signposted tourist loop, this isn’t for you. If you want to drive, wild-camp and breathe: this roadbook is exactly that.

The Alps 4×4 trails in pictures

Our Alps 4×4 trails, actually driven

These Alps 4×4 trails carry a special story for us. Julien first rode them as a kid, riding shotgun with his nose against the window, watching the passes roll by. It was here, on these military roads and high-altitude lanes, that his urge to leave one day — further, for longer — was born. Coming back today with our own Defender feels like closing the loop: the same mountains, the same smell of warm stone and larch, but our own tracks this time.

We drove these Alps as two, and as four paws. Pixie, our Yorkshire, slept in the Defender 130 at every camp, nose to the wind on the high military roads. We cooked facing the summits, waited for a herd to clear the track, and spent two days fixing a diesel hose out on the trail. Nothing staged: that’s what real travel is.

So this roadbook is far more than an itinerary: it’s a piece of us. We put our favorite finds in it and the places we hold onto carefully. No spot is dropped in at random: every waypoint earned its place. If the adventure calls you elsewhere, take a look at our other roadbooks: same standards, same honesty, same dust under the tires.

FAQ about the Alps 4×4 trails

What vehicle do I need for these Alps 4×4 trails?

A 4×4 or a 4×4 van on the right tires gets through the whole route. Trail bikes do very well too. It’s not an extreme course: it mostly asks for ground clearance, good tires and a little track experience.

Are the Alps 4×4 trails available offline?

Yes. You get a complete PDF and the GPX tracks to load into your GPS or your app. Once downloaded, you navigate with no signal, even at the bottom of a valley with no coverage.

How many days should I plan for the route?

We suggest 7 to 10 days to enjoy the passes, the wild camps and the detours without driving in a rush. You can shorten it with the variants provided, or stretch it out if you like taking your time.

What season is best to drive these Alps 4×4 trails?

The sweet spot runs from June to October, once the passes are clear of snow. Seasonal notes and sensitive sections are flagged in the roadbook to help you time your departure.
