Via del Sale Offroad in a 4×4: The Complete Guide
The Via del Sale offroad, the legendary salt road, links Liguria to the Piedmont Alps with panoramas that drop from snowy peaks straight down to the sea. Here is everything you need to drive this Via del Sale offroad route in a 4×4: the itinerary, the €20 toll and how to book, the new traffic light, the height limit and the historic Col de Tende.
Plan it the easy way
Want the whole Alps adventure ready to drive?
Before you dive into the guide: if the Via del Sale offroad is on your list, our Alps roadbook turns it into a complete one-week Alpine itinerary, fully scouted on the ground with GPS tracks, the best passes, viewpoints and bivouac spots. You just drive and enjoy.
What is the Via del Sale offroad?
The Via del Sale offroad, or Alta Via del Sale, is a historic mountain road once used to transport salt between the Ligurian coast and the Piedmont mountains. Today it draws 4×4 enthusiasts, motorbikes, cyclists and anyone who loves grand landscapes. We tackled it with our faithful Defender, and even under a moody sky the beauty of the Italian Alps stayed intact.
The route is partly managed and shared on altaviadelsale.com. From the high passes you can see the sea in the distance, a vision that genuinely blew us away, even through the fog.
A Via del Sale offroad drive full of history and beauty
The Via del Sale offroad is not a technical 4×4 challenge so much as a high-mountain panoramic track. It climbs through wild, open landscapes that keep their charm even under grey skies, with the rare gift of seeing the Mediterranean from the top of the Alps on a clear day.
Ideally you give it two days, so you can take your time, stop for the views and reach the Col de Tende without rushing. It is the kind of drive that stays engraved in your memory long after you are home.
Via del Sale offroad toll and booking: how it works
Some sections of the Via del Sale offroad are subject to a toll. The right of access is €20, and we strongly recommend booking your ticket online in advance, as numbers are limited.
If you plan to drive from north to south, buy your ticket on altaviadelsale.com. For a south to north crossing, the site to use is briga.info. Book early in summer and on weekends, when the route fills up fast.
Safety, traffic light and vehicle size
A recent addition makes the Via del Sale offroad safer: a traffic light now regulates a narrow passage where the crossings used to be delicate. With our Defender camper we were genuinely grateful for it, because without that system the section would have been very complicated, even dangerous.
One important warning: if your vehicle is over 2.50 m high, you may get stuck at this passage, and turning around there could be dangerous. Check your height and width carefully before committing, especially with a camper or motorhome build.
Arriving at the Col de Tende and its forts
The highlight of our Via del Sale offroad trip was reaching the Col de Tende. You arrive at the historic forts that overlook the Franco-Italian border, and you dive straight into the turbulent history of the region and its dark wartime past.
It is a powerful, humbling place. Standing among these old military forts, with the valleys falling away on both sides, you appreciate all the more the peace and freedom we have today. It is the perfect, memorable finale to the route.

Via del Sale offroad: best time, vehicle and navigation
Best time to go
Roughly June to October, once the snow has cleared the high passes. Summer weekends are busy, so book your toll early.
Vehicle
A standard 4×4 handles the route. Mind the 2.50 m height limit at the regulated passage, key for campers and motorhomes.
Navigation
Download the route in advance on Gaia GPS or OsmAnd so it works offline. Signal is patchy up in the passes.
How long
You can drive it in a day, but two days lets you enjoy the views and the Col de Tende properly without rushing.
An experience to do again
We drove through beautiful, wild landscapes that kept their charm even under a grey sky. Next time we hope to enjoy the Via del Sale offroad under clear blue skies, ideally over two full days. Even in cloudy weather, it was absolutely worth it and remains one of our favourite Alpine adventures.
Go further in the Alps
Want a full week in the Alps, scouted for you?
If the Via del Sale offroad gave you the overlanding bug, our Alps roadbook turns it into a complete one-week Alpine adventure: a longer route fully scouted on the ground, with GPS tracks, the best passes, viewpoints and bivouac spots. You just have to drive and enjoy.
