Our Morocco Sahara 4×4 story
We’ve been refining this Morocco Sahara 4×4 route for close to two years now. We keep going back, and every trip we push a little further, a little more south, a little further off the map. Our first week was a wet one: seven years of drought, then winter making up for all of it in a few weeks, with us right in the middle. We learned on the ground how careful you have to be when it rains out here. A riverbed that was bone dry turned into a torrent, right there in front of us. We waited it out. The desert will still be there tomorrow.
There was that limestone plateau, dry and windswept, flat all the way to the horizon, where we first tasted the kind of solitude that does you good. The first camels, whole herds on the move with the young ones in the middle. An old horseshoe-shaped fortress where we watched a sunset we won’t forget. A beautiful acacia standing in the middle of nothing, where we stayed two full days in the shade of its thick, thorny canopy, watching the light change everything.
No waypoint is dropped at random: every one is there because it earned its place.

Who is this Morocco Sahara 4×4 route for?
This one is for anyone chasing scale, silence and the pull of exploration. You sleep facing the dunes, you drive at the pace of the wind, you push into a country that is raw, mineral and full of light, where the scenery changes completely from one day to the next. It asks for self-sufficiency, a properly prepared vehicle and a bit of off-road experience.

What vehicle do I need for this Morocco Sahara 4×4 route?
A 4×4, an expedition truck or a properly shod 4×4 van gets through everywhere on the route, and trail bikes do very well. You need ground clearance, good tyres and a way to air down and re-inflate. For vehicles that are less at home off-road, five alternatives are plotted in the roadbook to bypass the most technical sections.
Does the roadbook work offline?
Yes. You get a complete PDF and the GPX tracks to load into your GPS or your app. Once downloaded, you navigate with no signal at all, even in the middle of a plateau where no network reaches.
How many days should I plan for the route?
We suggest 7 to 10 days to link it all up without rushing. If you want time to play in the sand, spend two nights at the same camp or explore the detours, plan closer to two weeks.
What’s the best season for a Morocco Sahara 4×4 trip?
The window runs from September to May. In summer, temperatures regularly go past 50 degrees out in the desert. Watch the rain too: the oueds rise in minutes and can stay impassable for days. It’s all covered in the prep guide.
